This Week in Baseball – Cardinals Surging, Chapman-Gregorius DL, Nationals Trades, Opening Day, Holliday Returns

Soaring Birds…

After winning 10 of 11 games, the Cardinals changed places with Milwaukee in the Central Division standings and into one of the Wild Card spots. The team was scuffling for much of the season and then fired manager Mike Matheny. Now with a little more than a month left in the season, the Cardinals look like they’re headed to the playoffs. If they want to win the division they should bring back Matheny and fire him again.

Yankees DL Dandies…

In a major blow to the New York Yankees, in the span of a few days they had to place Didi Gregorious on the 10-day DL and then placed their closer Aroldis Chapman on the 10-day DL with knee tendentious. The Yankees were so dominant earlier this year. But it turns that the team’s Achilles heel is injuries to their Achilles heel.

Nationals Treasures…

This week the Nationals announced they had traded three-time all-star Murphy to the Chicago Cubs and first baseman-left fielder Adams to the St. Louis Cardinals. In so doing, they all but threw in the towel on a season that began with World Series hopes and a roster talented enough to fulfill them. The extra room on the roster created by the trades is expected to be filled by Bryce Harper’s ego.

Early Bird Special…

Major League Baseball announced this week that all 30 teams will start the 2019 season on March 28, the earliest Opening Day in history. The previous earliest Opening Day was March 29 of this year. Coming Soon: Opening Baseball on New Year’s Day!

Holliday Cheer…

Veteran outfielder Matt Holliday, who had not played for the Colorado Rockies since 2008, was in the team’s starting lineup against the San Diego Padres on Thursday. The 38-year-old Holliday was called up after hitting .346 in 15 games at Triple-A Albuquerque. It’s time for the good times… Forget about the bad times… Holiday, celebrate.
