Touch 'Em All...
Home runs continue at a historic pace and baseball set a calendar-month record with 1,135 home runs in May. Previously, the most home runs in a single month was 1,119 in August 2017. The 2019 season is on pace to set a new single-season mark – through Friday they are at 2,279 home runs league-wide. With most of those coming against the Orioles.
Bruce Is Loose...
The Phillies are close to acquiring slugging outfielder Jay Bruce from the Mariners and the trade should be finalized Sunday. With Seattle struggling in last place, Bruce is reportedly willing to waive his no-trade clause in order to go to the first place Phillies – or Des Moines, or Nashville, or San Antonio.
Amateur Hour...
On Monday, June 3rd, MLB's three-day amateur draft will begin at the MLB Network studios in New Jersey. There will be 1,217 selections made this year. Young men who's lives will changed forever by getting the opportunity to play for a Major League Baseball team or the Marlins.
Electoral Votes...
The new All-Star ballot procedure has been announced and it's now a multi-tier voting experience. There will be primary and then a secondary voting round to establish the starters. Sounds a lot like our current political system. Don't be surprised to see players heading to Iowa and New Hampshire to launch their campaigns.
RIP Bill Buckner...
Veteran first baseman Bill Buckner has died at the age of 69. He will probably be remembered most for the ground ball that went between his legs in the 1986 World Series, but he will also be remembered for the poise and dignity he displayed afterward. In his career he played for five different teams, including the Red Sox, Dodgers and Cubs. His career spanned 22 years and he collected over 2,700 hits and won a batting title.
